As we write this in 2027, it is currently a UK government target that there are to be no NEW oil boiler installations from 2035. That sounds quite ominous on the face of it. So let’s delve a little bit deeper. Oil boilers, on the whole run on kerosene which is the domestic heating oil commonly used. It is kerosene that is to be phased out. So let’s delve into a myth:

  1. Oil boilers will be obsolote in 2035? This is highly unlikely due to nothing currently on the market being able to replicate the heating characteristics of an oil boiler. Not at a similar cost to install, in any case.

It is kerosene which is the issue. Manufacturers of oil boilers are invested into Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil (HVO) compatible boilers. This HVO will potentially replace kerosene and satisfy UK regulations as it can reduce carbon emissions by up to 90%.

The good news is that most of the major UK manufacturers of oil boilers are ensuring their boilers will be able to run on HVO in the future if required. So if you’re worrying will oil boilers be phased out in 2035?

Very, very unlikely. It is kerosene that is the issue and it’s highly likely to be replaced by HVO which modern boilers oil boilers will be able to run on.
